When we talk about visiting the peaks of Heimgarten and Herzogsrtand mountains in Germany, we cannot live without visiting “Walchensee”, one of the most beautiful, attractive, underrated and deepest Alpine Lake in Germany.
This beautiful lake with an area of 16.4square Km and with maximum depth of 192.3metres is located 75km South from Munich. Once you reach Munich, you can easily visit the location of Walchensee through bus, train or even a private car.
Walchensee has so much to offer to its visitors like watersports, swimming, wind surfing, riding a water bike etc. Just walking near the lake surrounded by beautiful mountains is itself a treat to explore. The crystal blue clear water gives you the view of 40metres depth inside the water which is a major attraction for tourists to visit. We can even call this beautiful place as a heaven for tourists especially in the season of summer because of its moderate and relaxing atmosphere.
During winter, arrival of visitors drop as temperature drops but still many people visit this place for hiking, visiting the Castle of Neuschwanstein and some other activities.
There are numerous cafes and restaurants which offer you delicious German food throughout the year.
The famous Walchensee cuisines include Flaeddlesuppe (German Pancake soup), Spatzle (type of a noodle served with cheese and fried onions) and Prinzregententorte (a multilayered cake with chocolate and buttercream).
According to German Researcher Alexandra Berghofer:
“The Walchensee is one of the largest and deepest alpine lakes in Germany. It is part of the Bavarian Prealps and is located at 800 m above sea level. It includes the island of Sassau in the middle of the lake. The lake has a unique turquoise tones and is located in the middle of the Karwendel Mountains. Herzogstand, Heimgarten and Jochberg offer spectacular panoramic views of the unique landscape. The bays around the lake invite you to picnic or swim.
The island of Sassau is a nature reserve, the island may not be entered. That is why there are many plants on the island that used to grow around the Walchensee. Many types of construction such as fir, beech, yew, spruce and some yew trees are more than 500 years old. The diverse vegetation on the banks is also protected. The people who live in the vicinity of the lake are closely connected to it.
Until the 18th century it was common to sink a consecrated gold coin there. The two Bavarian kings Max and Ludwig were enthusiastic about the three local mountains of their homeland. They explored and created many hiking trails possible there. Today the Walchensee is a popular destination with many possibilities. You can hike it on many routes with fantastic views. For all fans of wreck diving it is also an Eldorado, as there are planes from the 2nd world war or old cars. It was also the backdrop for some films. You can see a Viking village there. The lake with its bays invites you to have a picnic or to spend a nice day at the sea. Also an insider tip for sails and surfers because Thermal wind is constant and optimum on it.”
FAMOUS LANDSCAPE FOR ARTISTS
Walchensee is a famous place for people from the creative world, especially among painters. The famous German author and painter Lovis Corinth settled at Walchensee after the end of World War1 and made some of his master pieces as a painter during this era. Most of his paintings included “Impressionism” representing Walchensee landscape as a subject.
Another famous painter Lorenzo Quaglio “the Younger” preserved the beauty of Walchensee in his historical oil painting with the name “Der Walchensee “. This historical painting is now preserved in Munich City Museum.
