CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS IN POLAND:

The Christmas season in Poland starts exceptionally early. As a Catholic country, name days are celebrated here i.e. the day on which we celebrate the feast of Saint who bore the name given to us. December 6 is the feast of Saint Nicholas, named in his honor Mikolajki (Mikolajki is the Polish version of Nicholas). On this day, Polish children have their first contact of the year with Santa Claus, who leaves small gifts and sweets in socks left by them for the night.

What also distinguishes Poland from other European countries is fasting on Christmas Eve. It is forbidden to eat meat then, which is why most of the dishes on the Christmas table are fish and vegetables. Also on December 24, after the supper, when the first star appears in the sky, Sana Claus visits household again and gives the actual gifts.
